| Archbishop of Bombay, is suffering from a rare form of cancer | October 11 2008, 10:31 am | | Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, is suffering from a rare form of cancer, it was revealed here. The 63-year-old prelate underwent surgery in Washington, September 18. His illness, which was kept 'confidential' till last week, was made public by Auxiliary Bishop Bosco Penha of Bombay. The news was also published in the archdiocese's official weekly 'Examiner'. The cancer is said to have affected the archbishop's appendix. In the circular posted on the archdiocesan website October 4, Bishop Penha said, 'I feel sad and distressed to inform the clergy, the religious and the faithful of the archdiocese that Cardinal Oswald is suffering from health problems. Some weeks ago, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, for which the best treatment available is in Washington (United States). At that time it was thought better to keep the matter confidential. The surgery took place on Thursday September 18, 2008 and we are informed that he is responding well to the treatment. 'Keeping in mind the importance of Cardinal Oswald's position in the archdiocese (as archbishop), in the country (as president of the CCBI and vice-president of the CBCI) and in the Universal Church (he is now cardinal), it is imperative that we enter into a period of fervent and sustained prayer for Cardinal Oswald's quick return to complete health and strength. I request that all parishes conduct a holy hour as soon as possible for this intention. He is a young Cardinal and needed in the Church for many more years to come. Archdiocese's spokesperson Father Anthony Charanghat said that before the archbishop left for Rome, he was diagnosed with cancer and it was suggested that he get treated in Washington. 'The cancer was in the initial stages and there is no cause for worry.' Cardinal Gracias is expected to leave Washington for Rome on October 18 and will return to Mumbai 10 days later. | | Posted by: EIC UAE |

| IS GORAI SEZ CLEARED ? | October 1 2008, 09:05 pm | | In the wake of a sustained farmers’ agitation at Singur and a successful farmer’s referendum against SEZ at Pen-Panvel, the news of about the Gorai SEZ clearance came as a surprise. The news that appeared on the front page of the Sept 24, 2008 edition of the Times of India is queer due to many reasons. First of all it there is a sudden change in the company’s name from Pan India Paryatan (India) Ltd to Essel frastructure Ltd. The word ‘cleared’ does not indicate whether it is a ‘formal’ or ‘in principle’ approval. Secondly it speaks of a SEZ on 100 hectares of land although a multi-product SEZ requires a minimum of 1000 hectares of land. Thirdly it is reported that the SEZ will come up on Essel’s own lands. This is strange as they possess only 65 acres of land on which they are presently based and that too is totally surrounded by mangroves. Even the 760 acres of mangrove land which was awarded to them by the Government ten years ago is under litigation with the Gorai Machchimar Sahakari Sanstha. The MTDC plan of converting 1200 acres of eco-sensitive lands within CRZ (1000 acres of which are mangroves) into tourism infrastructure is stone walled by another litigation by the locals. Pursuant to a High Court order of 2005 moves are being made to hand over the entire mangrove land in the region to the Ministry of Environment and Forests. .We have written about this anomaly to the TOI who are making further investigations. We have also sought information under RTI that would clarify the matter. The news that they are going for a small SEZ and are not seeking Government or Private lands is itself a victory of the locals struggle against the hegemony. Now it is time the people start working towards having a self sustaining development plan for the region. . | | Posted by: EIC UAE |

| RASTA ROKO AND BURING OF EFFIGIES ON GORAI ROAD. | June 21 2008, 09:15 pm | | Over 3000 people carrying effigies of Mukesh Ambani and Subash Chandra Goel in a mock funeral procession marched from Chowk village to Uttan – Gorai Road Junction (Bhootbangla) to protest against the Maha Mumbai and Gorai SEZ on June 17,2008. There was a Rasto Roko on Gorai Road for two hours from 10.30 in the morning. Among the local leaders were Catholic priests who had come out in support of the agitation. .For the Gorai SEZ Subash Chandra Goel of Esselworld had obtained in – principle approval which was valid for one year. Due to wide scale agitation and awareness of the locals he was not able to acquire any lands for his project. But he managed to get an extension of one year for putting up his final proposal. However this period also lapsed and but now he has succeeded to get a further extension of six months which would end on Oct. 4, 2008. Mr. Gopal Pillai, chairman of the Board of Approvals for SEZ had promised us that no further extension would be given for the SEZ when a delegation had met him at Delhi, said Gordon D’Souza, Vice President of the Bombay Catholic Sabha. . .The locals are hell bent on not allowing the SEZ to come up on their lands. 1.25 lakh people are likely to be affected by this project. Among them are the fisher folk who comprise more than half the population. The remaining are farmers and salt pan workers. Joseph Gonsalves, president of Dharavi Bet Bachao Samiti spoke on why the ownership of lands should not change hands. He said that the locals would lose their occupations and would be dishoused if the SEZ came through. Besides the region was rich in culture and heritage as it is the home of the East Indians community, who are the sons of the soil. . .Gordon D’Souza, said that Esselworld was trying to use backdoor methods to set up the SEZ. They were planning to obtain lands through government tenders as they were unable to purchase any from the locals. The locals have gone to Court to stop 1200 acres of this eco sensitive land (1000 of which are mangroves) from being given away for development of tourism projects. The Bombay High Court has granted a status quo order on the lands and the case would be further heard on June 25, 2008. The MTDC tender notice for giving away these lands on lease to develop tourism projects is bad in law as mangroves are notified as forests by a Court order dated Oct. 6, 2005 and the Ministry of Environment and Forests is asked to take over possession of mangrove lands. . .Chandrashekhar of NAPM said that these agitations would continue till Oct. 4, 2008 to demand that no further extension be given for the SEZ approval. . .A similar Rasta Roko was organized at the same time on the Mumbai-Goa Highway at Vadkhal Naka to protest against the Maha Mumbai SEZ being developed by Mukesh Ambani. The people there are enraged that 22 irrigated villages in Pen taluka are brought into the SEZ in spite of the Government assurances that they would be kept out. . | | Posted by: EIC UAE |
| MANORI-GORAI SITS ON THE TINDER BOX | May 6 2008, 03:51 am | | OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER.Sacrilegious! Is all one can say of the Government’s move of giving away 1200 acres of eco sensitive land for development of tourism based industry at Manori and Gorai through tender notices advertised recently. Around 1000 acres of this land is mangroves that line the Gorai-Manori Creek and the rest is CRZ I lands that face the Arabian Sea. These lands are purported to be developed into Tourism Projects such as Marina / Big Wheel / Mangrove Park / Theme Park / Spa / Golf Club with Hotel / Entertainment based tourism project.. Mumbai would be sitting on the edge of an environmental disaster if this plan goes through. Mangroves are protected areas and there is a 2006 High Court judgment banning any destruction of mangroves. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has affirmed in Parliament that the mangroves of Manori and Gorai are meant for intensive conservation. They are the lungs of the city, a buffer for tidal waters, protection against tsunamis or tidal waves, a breeding ground for fish and a means of livelihood for thousands of small fishermen in the region who subsist on the catch within the mangroves. . Changing the status from ‘No Development’ to ‘Commercial’ will ruin these ‘saviours’ of mankind and invite impending disaster in the region. Already the No Development status for the land acquired by the Government for the Judicial Academy in nearby Uttan has been removed. The senile plans would be catastrophic for the city and the region. If the Government makes such concessions for Corporates to run businesses in the region then why is it demolishing houses of poor locals who wish to rebuild their houses for their growing families. Can this be justified?. There is a sinister move behind all these developments. Esselworld has already declared its intentions to the Government that it plans to close down the Amusement park as it is running in losses. Notices have been given to its workers that it wishes to close down. They have 800 more acres of mangrove land in their possession given to them by the Government ten years ago that is in litigation with the Gorai Machchimar Sahakari Sanstha. 1000 acres of mangrove land comprising two plots surrounding Esselworld are up for grabs through the tender floated by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation on April 9, 2008. Is Esselworld planning to cash in on the real estate boom and create private holiday resorts in the region with facilities like golfing etc. ? Or is this a backdoor entry for SEZ so that they can claim that they have their stipulated 70% of lands and the Government has to acquire the remaining for them as per the new Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy for SEZs? . Whatever be the outcome it doesn’t augur well for the residents of the region. It is a threat to their livelihood and transgresses the laws of the land. The Gorai Machchimar Sahakari Sanstha has gone to Court to get an injunction against the Government move. All hands to the wheel. Activists and organizations have to raise their voices against this gargantum crime against nature and humanity.. | | Posted by: EIC UAE |
